Overview
DrkChrm combines the compatibility and performance of Chromium with a strong focus on security, privacy, customization and resource efficiency. It's designed to work as a normal everyday browser while also providing a dedicated Secure Mode for situations where privacy and isolation matter more than maximum website compatibility.
DrkChrm is intended to be an open-source project — transparency is treated as part of its security philosophy, not an afterthought.
Why it exists
The core philosophy is summarized by the project itself:

DrkChrm is built around four principles: security should be built into the browser rather than left to extensions; privacy should be architectural, not opt-in; the browser should stay lightweight; and it should remain highly customizable without compromising its defaults.
Browser modes
Standard Mode
For everyday browsing. It aims to keep broad website compatibility while providing stronger privacy and security defaults than a conventional Chromium install — things like a built-in ad and tracker blocker, anti-fingerprinting measures, cookie controls, phishing and malware protection, and per-site permission management.
Secure Mode
Designed for situations where privacy, anonymity and isolation matter more than compatibility — conceptually inspired by browsers like Mullvad Browser and Tor Browser, while keeping DrkChrm's own architecture. The concept includes routing traffic through the Tor network, no persistent history, temporary storage, and more aggressive isolation and blocking. Tor does not replace HTTPS — Secure Mode is intended to conceal network origin, while HTTPS still protects the connection itself.
Planned features
These are design goals from the project's concept — not yet shipped:
- Explicit, user-approved download control rather than silent downloads
- A search-engine selector next to the address bar, with optional per-mode search profiles
- A Privacy Center summarizing trackers/ads blocked, fingerprinting protection and cookie status
- A Security Center summarizing sandboxing, site isolation and Secure Mode status
- Detailed per-site permission management (JavaScript, camera, microphone, location, and more)
- Extensive customization — accent colors, transparency, fonts, and custom New Tab backgrounds
Design philosophy
DrkChrm's visual identity is dark, minimal and technical — black, dark gray and gray, with white for contrast. The goal sits between the stripped-down minimalism of Mullvad Browser and the heavily stylized, gaming-oriented look of browsers like Opera GX: a professional, modern interface with its own distinct identity.
Open source & transparency
Because DrkChrm is positioned as a security and privacy-focused browser, the source code is intended to be publicly available on GitHub, with long-term goals around reproducible builds, documented security changes and public issue tracking.
Chromium, but darker. Private by design. Secure by default. Lightweight by choice.
