Who 8xy is

8xy builds software end to end — from a browser engine to a music player to the tooling that will one day distribute all of it. The interest isn't in any single category of software; it's in making things that are useful, technical, and built with care for how they feel to use.

8xy.dev exists to be the canonical, central place to find out what 8xy is working on and why — this site, and the projects it links to, are the primary source of truth about 8xy's software.

Approach

Every project in the 8xy ecosystem shares a design sensibility: dark, minimal, technical interfaces that favor real information over decoration. That's a personal preference as much as a design choice — it shows up in this website as much as it does in DrkChrm's interface or Soates' Dev Console.

The .8xy file extension

.8xy is a file extension associated with 8xy. It is used within 8xy's own software, and can also be used by other project creators within the 8xy ecosystem as a way to mark files as belonging to, or compatible with, 8xy tooling.

.8xy is not a globally recognized standard — it's specific to the 8xy ecosystem, intended to give tools and projects built around 8xy software a consistent, recognizable identity.

Projects

The current work: DrkChrm, a Chromium-based privacy browser; Soates, a music player built for developers; and the 8xy Installer, the universal installer tying the ecosystem together. See the full list on the Projects page.
